Fig. 3 Four aspects of local communities’ wellbeing. Source Authors
– Quality of peoples’ life—it should hold the residents’ well-being as the most
relevant strategy, together with the constant examination of the locals’ aspirations
and planning in their local environment;
– Quality of local business—it should assess employment possibilities and individuals affiliated with the community-based economy, together with the welfare of
local businesses;
– Quality of knowledge—it needs to make information, know-how and experiences
available between diverse communities in order to enhance local education strategies and future local plans and to deal with the short-term, long-term and alarming
issues; moreover, the tourists’ role can be vital in creating cultural and social
cohesion in the visited community, which may bring benefit to both sides; and
– Ecological quality—it should determine all advantages and disadvantages of the
communities’ environment, including nature, culture and other heritage in local
surroundings.
In other words, the prosperity of the local residents and their attitude toward
community-based tourism development in the selected locations show a statistically
significant difference depending on monthly income, community growth, and partly
on the respondents’ general economic connections with tourism activities. Such
information is important in order to support policies enhancing residents’ wellbeing,
to foster the selective types of tourism in rural areas, and to ensure the sustainable
development of natural surroundings. With the proper synchronization of these four
aspects, the positive interconnection between residents and tourism development can
be greatly possible. These should be the main propositions in developing a strategy
that will allow the local people to become active members of local tourism development. In this respect, the chapter offers readers a useful case study and the possibility to get a general idea or to look up facts pertaining to the possible development
directions on community well-being.
