The term of sustainable development has been known for several decades and is
widespread in science and everyday life. It is included in many programmes and used
by many institutions. However, the term itself and its definition, due to the complexity
of its issues, have not been particularised yet. The most important elements of this
concept include: the balance among natural, human, cultural, economic resources,
and social and economic growth, while keeping balance in the natural environment
(environmental and social and economic egalitarianism), and practicing sustainable
consumption to meet the needs of future generations (Kassenberg 2007; Podgajniak
2009; Kozak 2009), and striving for spatial order (Sumie´ n 1998; Sztumski 2006).
The essence of sustainable development in leisure time is to strive to improve the
quality of life through appropriate relations among work and leisure quality and satisfaction (Migdał 2011). In this context, it is crucial to consider how the leisure time
is put to use in the context of constant and sustainable development (Kolny 2014).
It is possible to notice some common points of both of those areas that significantly
influence the meeting of needs connected to recreation in the immediate surroundings and the development of interests and leisure activity in nature. The issues of
sustainable development are a subject of current interest, especially in the context
of tourist and recreation spaces, which are subjected to change and transformation
due to tourist and recreational pressure. Urban green areas, forests, parks, squares,
and allotments available in a city are used for active everyday leisure. Such places
comprise areas of significant recreational potential for the inhabitants of large cities
and metropolitan areas. Changing social needs, especially within large metropolitan
areas, result in developing specific relations between the inhabitants and the area
used for recreational and tourist purposes.
The contemporary directions of metropolitan area development and changes of
social needs related to recreation and tourism make it necessary to undertake research
connected to both the identification of leisure needs and of areas located in close
surroundings (Zamelska and Kaczor 2017a).
This paper aims at identifying selected determinants of recreational and tourist
activity of the inhabitants of rural communes of the Pozna´ n Metropolis during their
free time. The article concerns a single element engaged in sustainable development—the local community living in rural communes of the Pozna´ n Metropolis.
The following theses were assumed: (1) the activity is mainly induced by the need
for achieving well-being through active recreation, looking for peace, and improving
health, and (2) the preferences and needs do not differ significantly regardless of the
home’s location. In addition, the paper aims at determining main leisure areas used
by the inhabitants of rural communes within the Pozna´ n metropolis, especially for
weekend and afternoon leisure activities.

In the current times of globalisation and its economical, socio-cultural and technical
aspects, we can also observe changes in spatial systems that result in distinguishing
