8.2 Temporal Distribution of Carbon Capture Technology
Practitioners and researchers are often interested in trends within a certain field of
technology. To evaluate progress in carbon capture innovations, we extracted data
on authorization year from the database and identified shifts in annual growth and
cumulative development.
8.2.1 Annual Development of Patent Count
Figure 8.2 presents carbon capture patents authorized annually since 1976, measured
by patent count. There are two clear phases: (1) a fluctuating, slowly increasing
phase and (2) a sharply increasing phase. It appears that 2006 was a turning point in
technology development. In the slowly increasing phase prior to 2006, the annual
