Abstract
Artemia is a small branchiopod which provides an essential living food for the larvae
culture in fish and shellfish farming. Due to its importance in this field, the present study was
carried out with objective estimating the growth of Artemia from El Bahira lake (Setif
province) in culture with a different diet.
The results reveal that the average of diameter of normal, hydrated and decapsulated
cysts is 217.1 ± 14.6 µm, 235.26 ± 9.4 µm and 177.4 ± 14.1 µm, respectively, and the average
length of nauplii is 377 ± 2.05 µm. Artemia cysts from El Bahira lake have a hatching rate of
55.78% with a hatching efficiency of 28986.67 nauplii /g of cysts.
A strong growth correlation was observed between the total length of Artemia
individuals and culture time for the three types of diet, with a greater growth rate of Artemia
individuals in culture with a diet of yeast for juveniles (1.7 mm/D) and adults (0.3 mm/D)
unlike other culture based on Chlorella where a minimum growth rate of juveniles was
observed (0.24 mm/D) and based on Ulva powder where a minimum growth rate of adults
was observed (0.07 mm/D).
