C. Receptor
The pollutants in the groundwater will expose the workers in the landfill and the
surrounding residents during the use of the land of the site. According to the usage
conditions of the site and the surrounding areas, the sensitive receptors are identified as workers at the site and residents around the landfill site.
III. Exposure pathway analysis
Receptors in a polluted environment could be exposed through three ways, by
drinking groundwater, by inhaling outdoor vapors of groundwater, and by inhaling
indoor vapors of groundwater. The groundwater at this site was not used for
drinking, thus excluding the possibility of exposure of the surrounding people from
drinking groundwater. According to the results of HERA calculations (see
Table 5.101) and the characteristics of the pollutants of concern, the receptors
won’t be exposed by inhaling outdoor vapors of the groundwater or inhaling indoor
vapors of the groundwater. That is, there is no pathway for exposure of the pollutants in the groundwater of the informal landfill to pose a risk to human health.
(2) Health risk assessment conclusions
Through the screening, toxicity analysis and exposure assessment of the pollutant in
the groundwater of the landfill, it is found that the toxic and harmful pollutants
selected in the groundwater of the site do not pose any risk of harm to human health.
Case 11 Groundwater pollution survey, source intensity evaluation and risk
assessment of Beijing centralized hazardous waste disposal center
1. Overview of study area
(1) Overview of physiographic conditions
① Physiographic conditions
The centralized hazardous waste disposal center is located to the southwest of
downtown Beijing, about 35 km straight-line distance away. The site is located in
the downwind direction of the prevailing wind direction all the year round and
downstream of the groundwater flow. The site is located in the middle of Dashi
River alluvial-proluvial fan and on the terrace sandwiched by Dashi River and
Ciwei River. The terrain is basically flat, with single genetic type and simple
morphotype of landform, and the Quaternary formation is about 49 m thick. With
an elevation of about 39.4–39.7 m, according to the evaluation by the local
authorities of water affairs, the site is above the once-in-a-century flood level.
② Meteorological conditions
The site has a typical warm-temperate-zone semi-humid continental monsoon climate with hot and rainy summer, cold and dry winter and short spring and autumn.
The annual average temperature is 10–12 °C, −7 to −4 °C in January and 25–26 °C
