⑦ Correlation between the leachate of waste pile and the surrounding
groundwater
The measurement results during the investigation period reveal that the floor of the
waste pile has an elevation of 13.76–15.04 m, and the water level of the 1st aquifer
has an elevation of 16.82–16.89 m, which indicates the waste pile body has already
been soaked in the 1st aquifer. The roof of the 2nd aquifer has an elevation of
3.21 * 4.63 m. A barrier layer, i.e., the silty clay and clayey silt layer ③ is
distributed continuously between the floor of the 1st aquifer and the roof of the 2nd
aquifer. This indicates the waste pile is located above the 2nd aquifer.
The main source of leachate from the waste pile is the original pond, which was
formed by exposing the 1st aquifer during excavation for sand material, therefore
the leachate in the waste pile has a close hydraulic correlation with the 1st layer of
groundwater in the surrounding area (Fig. 5.55).
During the investigation leachate was exposed from all exploration holes at the
landfill site, and the leachate had high hydraulic head. Analysis revealed that there
is a close hydraulic correlation between the leachate and the 1st layer of
