By comparing results shown in Tables 5.64 and 5.65, the observed chlorine and
fluorine do not exceed the screening levels. There is no risk of exposure to ammonia
nitrogen because the exposure pathway is not included in this assessment. Given this,
the health risk assessment of groundwater environment is not needed for the landfill.
Case 7 Groundwater pollution investigation, source intensity evaluation and risk
assessment of an MSWLF in Sichuan Province
This simple valley-type landfill approximately covers an area of 14,000 m
2 and has
a storage capacity of 200,000 m
3 and a service life of 17 years. According to the
field investigation, about 40 m
3 /d of leachate is produced, but there are no available
treatment facilities. Groundwater in the hydrogeological units of the landfill is not
used for drinking purpose.
(1) Natural environment and hydrogeology
(a) Topography
The landfill is located on the east side of Zheduo Mountain in western Sichuan
Province, so the landform is considered as alpine valley. High in the north and low
in the south, mountains are distributed in the north-south direction, leading to
greater cutting depth and larger slope. Vegetation is also dense while mountains are
stacked. The topography of the survey area is as shown in Fig. 5.29.
(b) Lithology
According to the local hydrogeological data, the subterranean stratum of the landfill
is the Lower Triassic Bocigrou Formation (T1b). It is mainly composed of medium
to thick sandstone that looks gray to pale grayish green. In the middle and lower
parts of the stratum, there are phyllites, sericite slate stone and some thin slate-like
limestone and crystalline limestone, which are soft and easy to break.
(c) Geology
The fault zones in the area mainly include the Yala River fault zone, the Xianshui
River fault zone, the Kangding-Moxi fault zone, the Yulin River fault, the
Baiyangwan fault, the Longtougou fault and the Zhuanjinglungou fault. Among
them, the Yala River fault zone where the landfill is located starts from Erdaoban
along the Qianning-Danba Highway and reaches the south of Paoma Mountain in
Kangding through Yari Acu, Xindianzi, Zhonggu, Reshuitang, Wangmu, and Yala
County. The fault zone extends about 73 km and spans from 30° N to 40° W. The
fault is a part of the Xianshui River fault zone and nearly parallel to the main fault.
(d) Hydrogeological conditions
• Groundwater type and endowment conditions
Given the endowment conditions, groundwater in the landfill site consists of fissure
water of shallow weathered metamorphic rocks and mainly exists in the Lower
