significant variation in disassembly processes. In addition, disassembly process itself
differs from product to product because different design requires different disassembly means and tasks. Thus, customization of disassembly process to each individual product is quite promising for recovering maximum value from it so as to
enhance material circulation in society. To support such customized disassembly,
information sharing among all stakeholders involved in a whole life cycle of a given
product is essential.
34.3.2 Business Viewpoint
The vision of customized disassembly is to achieve higher utilization of components and materials retrieved from EOL products so as to make the Earth more
sustainable. The value focused in the use case is provision of essential information
and services that helps disassembly firms to minimize disassembly cost as well as to
maximize their profit by selling recovered components and materials. The other value
perceived by original equipment manufacturers (OEM) will be obtaining cheaper
(and sometimes more reliable) components from disassembly firms. This can also
lead environmental load reduction, which can be perceived as value for the Earth.
Fundamental capabilities required in the use case are (i) information sharing
among all stakeholder involved in a whole life cycle of a product and (ii) adequate
selection of life cycle options (e.g. reuse, recycling, landfill, and so forth) for each
individual component retrieved from EOL products based on the information from
OEMs and users.
Figure 34.1 shows the business viewpoint of customized disassembly. We first
identifies 13 stakeholders (including the Earth) as shown in the figure. Major
stakeholder in the use case are summarized as follows,
Disassembly firm (DF):
The party who operates disassembly firm to retrieve usable components and materials from EOL products. DF is a user of customized disassembly support service
and provides cheaper and sometimes more reliable components to OEM. DF is
responsible for adequate reuse, recycling, and EOL treatment of discarded products.
Customized disassembly service provider (CDSP):
The party who provides customized disassembly support service with DF based on
knowledge and information about individual EOL product.
Information provider (IP):
The party who provides useful information for customized disassembly such as
product (component, and material) specification, disassembly means, technological
information about disassembly equipment, residual lifetime of the components, legislation about and subsidy for reuse and recycling, acceptable conditions of reuse
components and so forth. Some of these information can be directly obtained from
