B. Kianian and C. Andersson
and Arnhold 2012; Azevedo et al. 2018). Although most of these studies acknowledged sustainability issues or at least the environmental aspects, neither comprehensive environmental assessment nor life cycle perspective have been conducted or
considered in their investigations.
Steel PM emission share in industrial emission is currently small; however, this
could change and become more notable due to the high pace advancement, adoption
and deployment of emerging technologies like metal additive manufacturing (AM)
and its new material development (Azevedo et al. 2018). In order to contribute to the
field with the main intention of reducing the aforementioned gaps, the present authors
will conduct comprehensive sustainability assessments e.g. environmental and social
LCA, as their future work. In addition, their previous LCC studies (Kianian et al.
2019; Kianian 2019) will be further advanced to include environmental and social
aspects as well. These will be performed by identifying the parameters, which drive
the sustainability aspects and align them with cost drivers and its components in the
PPC in order to create a DSS for companies in their pursue for alternative sustainable
production systems.
Acknowledgements The authors would like to express their sincere thanks to the case study companies for their cooperation and continuous support of this research project. The financial support from
Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research (SSF) through the ‘Nanotechnology Enhanced Sintered
Steel Processing’ project (grant no. GMT14-0045) is also appreciated.
