Selected Determinants of Recreational and Tourist Activity of the Inhabitants …

parks and gardens of the metropolis. This can be a great guideline for people involved
in preparing and extending the offer of leisure activities for the elderly.
In order to verify relations between the variables an analysis was performed based
on the Pearson’s r correlation coefficient. The analysis included a set of variables, such
as: demographic, social and economic features, preferences concerning geographic
space, and needs behind tourist and recreational activity of the inhabitants of rural
communes of the Pozna´ n Metropolis (Table 1). Correlation was statistically significant at the level of 0.05 for 78.2% of the relations between variables, and at the
level of 0.01 for as much as 61.8%. It is possible to say that the proposed model
greatly explained interdependencies between variables, because more than a half of
correlation coefficients presented in the table were significantly significant. Only 11
(of 55) of the analysed correlations were statistically insignificant.
The strongest correlation, including 8 pairs of the variables (14.5% of coefficients), was found between the inhabitants’ 2015 and 2016 expenses for tourist and
recreational trips within the area of the Pozna´ n Metropolis (r = 0.79). This indicates a stable level of expenses for that purpose. The diversity of elements of natural
environment and features of geographical environment preferred by the respondents
was also strong (r = 0.76). Significant moderate correlation was noticed in the case
of 22 pairs of analysed variables (47.3% of coefficients). Correlations between the
amount of goods which might be used in tourist and recreational activities owned in
the household and monthly income (r = 0.42), preferred elements of natural environment (r = 0.40), features of geographical environment (r = 0.39), and the needs
(r = 0.30) are worth noticing.
Attention should be given to a negative correlation between variables, including
21.7% coefficients (significant on the level of 0.05) occurring between the respondents’ age and the majority of other factors (except for the amount of free time).
Influence of the analysed factors decreased with age.
The set of variables sufficiently described relationships between the groups of
factors influencing and conditioning the activity of the inhabitants of rural communes
of the Pozna´ n Metropolis.

Short, one-day tourist and recreational activities within the area of the metropolis
predominated among the surveyed inhabitants (65%) (as shown in Table 2), regardless of their home location, although inhabitants of rural communes indicated them
slightly more frequently (by 5 percentage points). Respondents (12%), especially
from rural communes (only 5%), participated in longer (5 days or more) trips within
the area of the metropolis the least frequently. The cause of that may be the fact that
