1 Introduction
Many fields of science have been interested in leisure time and different forms of
leisure activities. The holistic approach to human development, besides the homo
laborans and homo oeconomicus
1 attitude, includes selected forms of leisure activities to give people a feeling of satisfaction and fulfilment and assure good physical
and mental health, but mainly to enable relaxation and free activity, including intellectual activity (Dzwonkowska 2011, p. 23; Truszkowska-Wojtkowiak 2012, p. 8).
Leisure time includes the areas of contemplation, culture, cognitive activity, social
relationships, and participation in recreation and tourism (play, walks, physical recreation, sightseeing tours, etc.) (Veal 1997, pp. 1–2; Pacholski and Słabo´ n 1997, p. 22).
It is a time of consumption, of variable behaviours of recreational character enabling
a person to satisfy their needs in the home’s location or in cultural institutions, service
establishments, and in the natural environment (Cieloch et al. 1992, p. 32). However,
a person’s needs change depending on demographic, spatial, and economic variables.
Every person with some spare time “consumes it” on different activities voluntarily,
according to their own likings or needs that might not be a vital necessity.
1 Homo laborans—realisation of one’s humanity only through professional activity (Poskrobko
2011; Werner 2009), homo oeconomicus—a person pursuing maximalisation of economic gains
(Dopfer 2004).
