00 E longitudes (Fig. 12.1). It is an ephemeral
and rain-fed river having an asymmetrical drainage system. The elevation of the
basin varies from 189 to 430 m and the general direction of slope is from southwest
to northeast. About 80% of the area of the basin is composed of alluvial deposits,
windblown sands, and sand deposits. Agriculture and livestock are the leading
sources of livelihood in the rural areas. The basin has two main cropping seasons:
kharif (June–October) and rabi (November–March). The kharif season crops are
highly dependent on rainfall occurrence whereas the rabi season crops depend on
groundwater. The climate of the basin is semiarid. In summers (April–June), the
temperature reaches its peak, ranging from 32
to 46
C, whereas it ranges between
16.9
and 19.1
C in winters (November–January). The mean annual rainfall in the
basin is approximately 634 mm. The monsoon season (June–September) contributes
about 87% to the total annual rainfall.
Materials and Methods
Data Collection and Database Preparation
In the present study, daily rainfall data of nine stations well spread over the Sahibi
Basin, for a 57-year period (1961–2017), were used (Fig. 12.1). The data were
