Preface
This volume is the second part of the book “Water Resources in Poland” which
focused on “Quality.” As the name implies, this volume is devoted to the quality and
protection of water resources.
This book consists of 19 chapters, which are presented in 5 parts. This is the result
of a teamwork of scientists from various institutions and research centers who, in
their scientific research, address the issue of water quality in surface and underground
waters and their changes under the influence of natural and anthropogenic factors.
Water quality research is a basic responsibility of the state, which includes monitoring the quality of water resources and assessing water quality. These studies in
Poland are carried out under the State Environmental Monitoring and are publicly
available data. The State Environmental Monitoring includes a system of research
and assessment of the state of the environment ensuring registration of changes
that occur in it. Reliable information on the degree of degradation of individual
elements of the natural environment is necessary for making optimal decisions by
state administration at all levels. Tests are carried out at designated facilities or points
in accordance with the adopted schedule and testing procedure. On rivers and lakes
not covered by the State Environmental Monitoring, research is conducted by various
water users and scientists. The scientific material collected in this book is unique.
It presents the results of studies developed by the authors of the chapters based on
publicly available data obtained from the State Environmental Monitoring or the
Central Statistical Office. These studies are supplemented by the results obtained
during fieldwork carried out for selected rivers or lakes by researchers. Often these
are the only such studies conducted for these facilities. They can provide a basis for
including a given object in systematic monitoring tests.
The scientific material presented in this book is the most recent information on
the topic that can be useful to both practitioners and experts in quality of water
resource in Poland. We hope that designers, employees not only dealing with water
management, as well as society will find useful information on the quality of water
resources, necessity and possibilities of their protection. Systematic examination and
assessment of the quality of surface and underground waters in Poland will allow
for a reliable diagnosis of the existing condition, forecasting these changes in the
