1 Introduction to the “Quality of Water Resources in Poland”

sustainable utilisation of water resources in metropolises is made possible by comprehensive surface water management systems which enable the pro-environmental and
economic reutilisation of water, and thereby water security management for both
man and the natural environment. The minimisation of flood risk in the metropolitan
area can be attained through the implementation of a cohesive programme targeted
at changing the method of usage of the river valleys: the biotechnical method of
development of precipitation water, afforestation, or limiting the sealing of surfaces
of urbanised areas.
The book ends with conclusions and recommendations, which are contained in
Chapter 19.
