make vast areas around uranium mining, milling and processing facilities which
were found to be radioactively contaminated reach levels which exceed the present
severe protection standards. Substantial funds have been allocated to return these
areas to such conditions so that they can be returned to an environmentally acceptable level for normal exploitation. The decontamination process, which is aimed at
keeping radioactive concentrations in soil, water and the air at permissible levels,
is under implementation in many countries where uranium was mined, milled and
processed.
