annual increase of the check-dam land becomes smaller, and the equilibrium of soil
and water in the catchment would be easy to be realized.
Relationship between relative stability of the dam system and that of the single
dam. The relative stability of the dam system was firstly recognized from the natural
Juqiu on the Loess Plateau, and then the relative stability of the check-dam system
was developed to emphasize the safety of the flood preventing and controlling (Fang
1995). Unfortunately, a big dispute arose on the relationship between the critical
coefficient for relative stability of the dam system and the flood preventing and
controlling. As stated before, the relative stability of the dam system mainly refers
the balance of the soil and water. Relative stability of the check-dam system has
positive effects on the safety of the dam system, nevertheless, it is not the determined
factor in the structural safety of a single check-dam.
The relative stability of the dam system reflects the overall development of the
check-dam system. The premise is that the soil and water production on the whole
