3 Everyday Activities in the Green World
avoid the use of hazardous pesticides, and can therefore grow vegetables and
fruits that are safe for workers, the consumers, and surrounding communities.
Similarly, sustainable livestock farmers raise their animals without adopting dangerous practices, including the use of non-therapeutic antibiotics. Responsible
livestock management ensures that humans are protected from toxins and pathogens.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are one of the models for sustainable
agriculture through the farming practices used in their production (Gold 2016).
These methods help in reducing the environmental footprint and preserving natural
resources. Today, crop biotechnology enables GMOs to reduce the losses related to
extreme weather events. Biotechnology is already providing solutions to significant
challenges experienced globally.
3.2.2.3 Sustaining Vibrant Communities
A crucial aspect of sustainable agriculture is its capacity to be economically
profitable by offering farmers, food processors, and other individuals employed
within the food system fair working conditions. Sustainable farms also enhance
economies, create jobs, and build healthy communities.
3.2.2.4 Upholding Animal Welfare
Sustainable ranchers and farmers treat animals appropriately and implement appropriate livestock husbandry practices that protect the health and well-being of
animals. By feeding animals pasture, sustainable farmers allow animals to move
freely, engage in instinctive behaviors, eat a natural diet, and avoid the problems
associated with confinement, including the spread of diseases.
3.2.2.5 Sustainable Food Future
The transition to sustainable food will take some time, but its importance for a Green
World cannot be disregarded. The critical aspect of stakeholders in sustainable
agriculture is to provide resources and tools that can enable consumers to make
informed food choices (Kalantari et al. 2018). One can also contribute to sustainable
agriculture by learning to shop, cooking sustainably, and eating the appropriate
foods.
3.2.3 Demerits of Sustainable Agriculture
Whereas sustainable agriculture has numerous benefits, it is crucial to understand
some of its disadvantages or challenges that would have to be overcome. First,
