2.6 Summary

2.5.6 North America
In a single generation, the climate in numerous North American cities will change to
that of locations found miles away or to another climate, unlike the one experienced
in this continent today. By the 2080s, even with limits being imposed on emissions,
North American urban areas will have completely different climates (University of
Maryland Center for Environmental Science 2019). In case conditions continue
uncontrolled in the entire century, the urban areas of North America will have the
contemporary climate like that of the South. For example, within the Eastern part of
the US, almost all the urban areas, including Philadelphia, New York, and Boston
will resonate with the contemporary climates of the southwest and south.
2.5.7 South America
South America will experience reduced rainfall in the south and east of the Amazon
region as well as the coast of South America. There is also a likelihood of droughts
intensifying in some areas and seasons because of lower precipitation and higher
levels of evapotranspiration. Heatwaves will increase in frequency, intensity, and
length.
2.6 Summary
• This chapter explored the definitions of major Basic Ecology terms, such as
ecology, biosphere, ecosystem, community, population, organisms, and carrying
capacity.
• The second part of the chapter discussed weather and climate, with a focus on
temperature, humidity, wind, precipitation/rainfall, and the sun’s radiation.
• The third part of this chapter examined the biogeochemical cycles of Green
World. The primary processes of the water cycle were explored, including
evaporation, condensation, sublimation, precipitation, transpiration, runoff, and
infiltration. The main processes of the carbon cycle explored were dissolution
and photosynthesis. One of the findings is that the presence of carbon determines
whether a substance is organic or inorganic. Various factors, especially human
activities and seasons, influence the presence of carbon in the atmosphere.
• This chapter has also explored three steps of the nitrogen cycle: nitrogen fixation,
denitrification, and nitrification. In addition, the sulfur and phosphorus cycles
have been explored comprehensively.
• From this chapter, a major point to note is that concepts in Basic Ecology play a
crucial role in Greenness.
