As citizens, we have a critical role and should reconsider our lifestyles. Taking
responsibility further entails undertaking the crucial steps and personal actions to
create a more responsible community and business. There is a need to change our
attitudes to enhance environmental quality, economic health, and achieve social
equity. Therefore, we should begin taking small steps that bring about positive
changes and inspire others to drive our society towards sustainability. If we, as
citizens, feel individually engaged and dedicated to sustainability, we can lay the
foundation for embracing change at a societal level.
13.6 Role of Government
The government plays a crucial role in enhancing sustainability. It protects the
environment and individuals through the various legislations that it implements.
During the regulatory process, governments are well positioned to enhance ecofriendly practices that are naturally sustainable. For example, in the US, the
federal government has played a crucial role in enhancing awareness regarding
sustainability issues. The promulgation of eco-friendly regulations also results in
the attainment of sustainability objectives. A government can also promote the
utilization of best practices to ensure that there is an effective and efficient use of
resources, especially since they are usually used to advance corporate objectives
(Laszlo and Zhexembayeva 2017). Some of the best practices include recycling of eequipment, the development of complex systems for renewable energy development,
reduction of toxic contaminants in the use of materials, and encouraging the
use of certain fuels other than hydrocarbons. Rwanda is among the countries
that developed measures to ensure that eco-friendly practices are embedded in
government activities.
The government is also critical in advancing sustainability by encouraging
sustainable actions that can be rolled out easily. In building a sustainable economy,
the roles of the government entail funding basic science that is required for
renewable energy and technology, using the tax system for steering capital towards
investment in sustainable technologies and businesses, investing in sustainable
infrastructure, and minimization of ecosystem destruction. The government also has
