Using real-life examples, explain how mobile computing can be used for
promoting sustainability.
• The seventh application is intelligent transportation systems (ITS) that seeks to
enhance travel times and safety while reducing greenhouse gas emissions for all
the travelers, but focusing primarily on drivers. Intelligent transportation systems
has two systems for data collection/relay and data processing.
• Advanced public transportation systems seek to enhance the efficiency and
convenience of public transportation for its riders.
• Advanced traffic management systems are crucial for collecting information
about road congestion using cameras as well as other sensors.
Provide examples of advanced traffic management systems that are inherently
sustainable.
• Vehicles communicate with manufacturers to facilitate remote installation of
software updates during the addition of new features or patching of bugs. Such
updates are used by Tesla Motors for increasing the performance and efficiency of
their cars. These connections provide ITS with a means for accurately collecting
information and even relaying it to drivers without the need for infrastructure.
12.8 Agriculture
Agriculture is defined as the tilling or cultivation of land and domestication or
breeding of plants as well as animals to provide medicinal plants, fiber as well
as other products for sustaining and enhancing life. Farmers can use numerous
agricultural practices for making agriculture more sustainable, including those that
result in better water and nutrient efficiencies as well as targeted plant protection.
As agriculture plays a crucial role in feeding the world population, food production
methods should embrace the aspect of sustainability.
12.8.1 Basic Definitions and Concepts
• Agronomy: The science and technology of producing as well as utilizing plants
for fuel, fiber, land reclamation, and food.
• Soil conservation: The use of appropriate methods to ensure sustainable soil
usage.
