12 Sustainability in Science
• Radiation therapy: This is a therapy that uses ionizing radiation as part of cancer
treatment to kill malignant cells.
• Drug: This refers to medication or any other substance that poses a physiological
impact when it is ingested or introduced into the body.
• Treatment happens in the offices of physicians, clinics, nursing homes, and home
visits.
• The primary care provider can treat approximately 90% of medical visits.
• Some treatments are chronic and acute illnesses, health education, and preventive
care.
• Medical specialists provide auxiliary medical services in clinics, at the local
community hospitals, or within their offices.
• Referrals are made for patients who need procedures or expertise carried out by
specialists.
• Referrals include inpatient services/ambulatory care, intensive care medicine,
physical therapy, and endoscopy units.
• Specialist hospitals or regional centers provide tertiary medical services, including burn treatment and trauma centers, advanced neonatology unit services, as
well as high-risk pregnancy (Getz 2006).
12.5.2 Application of Sustainability in Medicine
• ThedaCare is a Wisconsin hospital that has developed a “sustainability leader”
position. It is also in position to host the Climate and Health Symposium for
educating employees regarding environmental education.
• The Healthier Hospitals Initiative is another application of sustainability in
Medicine. It is a national campaign for improving sustainability within the
healthcare sector.
• Tenet Health also embeds sustainability initiatives. In its Sustainability Report,
there is a sense of system-wide approach for improved health and highlights the
way the strategy is embedded at the local level.
• The other application is the shift from the mere treatment of diseases towards
wellness and prevention.
• Magee Women’s Hospital of The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center,
UPMC, is an example that teaches parents regarding the link between human
health and the environment. It uses parental classes and the Baby Steps to Green
Parenting program.
• The increasing number of chronic diseases associated with diet has made
hospitals roll out sustainable food policies.
• Hospitals and healthcare institutions are working to identify impediments to
healthier food systems and enhancing nutritious alternatives.
• Fletcher Allen, in Vermont, is a leader in this movement that buys local organic
veggies and cheese. This is important because it is an element of sustainable
agricultural and medicinal practices that promote sustainable living.
