12 Sustainability in Science
• The Third law of Thermodynamics states that “The entropy of a perfect crystal
is zero when the temperature of the crystal is equal to absolute zero.”
• A fundamental concept of thermodynamics is that we can divide the planet into
a system and the surroundings .
• Sustainable engineering is defined as the process geared towards the design
or operation of systems in order for them to utilize resources and energy
sustainability. In other words, it considers sustainable resource use at a rate that
does not limit or compromise the natural environment.
• Materials of engineering refer to the selection of appropriate materials for
application.
• Energy Conservation: This entails the use of materials that use less quantity of
energy. It is the most crucial aspect of building green.
• Indoor Environmental Quality: The quality of the inner part of the house. In
numerous cases, engineers create a healthier environment by avoiding hazardous
materials that are found in carpets, finishes, and paint. It also entails the use of
appropriate ventilation and sufficient daylighting.
12.3.2 Application of Sustainability in Physics and
Engineering
• In physics, sustainability is applied in five major ways: energy and work,
thermodynamics, electricity and magnetism, nuclear physics, and electronics.
• In energy and work, the focus is often on foundations for sustainability issues.
• In thermodynamics, applications have been achieved through issues of heat,
energy use, and entropy.
Identify some of the Physics and Engineering applications in Africa that
embed sustainability.
• Regarding electricity and magnetism, sustainability is applied through commercial power generation and use.
• In nuclear discipline, application is evident in commercial power generation and
waste.
• The sub-discipline of eco-physics highlights the way power generations can be
environmentally friendly (Davidson et al. 2010).
• Exergy is a phenomenon that adheres to the First and Second Laws of thermodynamics.
• Exergy is crucial for providing a foundation for resource and emissions accounting.
