Chapter 12
Sustainability in Science
Abstract Science is a key driver of the numerous applications, technologies, and
solutions embraced in the various disciplines. To this end, this chapter seeks to
identify the major terms in science and explore the application of sustainability
in each discipline. It uses the case study of biomimicry to demonstrate the way.
Science can use sustainability in its efforts. An experiment on biomimicry is also
conducted to enhance understanding of the topic. More importantly, Elon Musk’s
individual matter offers insights on the significance of embedding sustainability in
science. This chapter is a further contribution to the sustainability debate, and the
larger Going Green initiatives. By understanding the various concepts, it can help
learners and tutors to embed the sustainability concepts in science. Future trends
in the subject are provided to offer a glimpse into the outlook of sustainability in
science.
Keywords Biomimicry · Elon Musk · Green chemistry · Physics and
engineering · Velcro · Mathematics · Medicine
12.1 Introduction
Sustainability is an important concept in science. Ideally, science plays a major role
in innovation and invention. It also plays a critical role in farming, manufacturing,
and industries. Consequently, embedding sustainability in science is pertinent to
ensuring that production processes consider the values and benefits associated with
sustainability. The primary focus of this chapter will be to examine the applications
of sustainability in various subjects: both scientific and non-scientific. A holistic
approach is undertaken to ensure that all pertinent issues are addressed.
