of students finding it difficult to study at home. She witnessed this in Rustenburg
and decided to co-found repurpose schoolbags with Rea Ngwane (Hawken 2015).
The company makes schoolbags that have been upcycled through the integration
of solar technology. It charges at daytime and provides light for students to study
after darkness sets in. The 100% recycled bags have changed the lives of numerous
young students. In addition, they cause less harm to the environment while providing
the required renewable energy light for young learners to study in an area that
lacks electric light. Reflective light material also enables the students to see as they
walk long distances to attend school. Through Green entrepreneurship, Thato has
positioned herself as a change agent in her community.
Highlight how schools can embrace such ventures.
11.5.2.9 The Green Institute Nigeria
The Green Institute is a campus-based initiative that was founded by Adenike
Akinsemolu to promote environmental conservation. The initiative is committed to
tackling the challenges of environmental sustainability and climate change through
innovative academic research, campus action, and mentoring and development of
environmentally conscious leaders. The core aim of the initiative is to rally young
people across Nigeria to reorient their thinking about the environment and gain
knowledge about Green entrepreneurship. As a training program, it is designed
to provide training to learners about sustainable practices and environmental
sustainability. Trainees are typically placed in sections that are related to their fields
of interest and closely supervised. It provides interns with a chance to undergo
experiential learning and gain relevant skills that are beneficial for professional
development. Sustainability is among the core goals of the University. This is
evidenced in the entire campus through the sustainable facilities, micro-wind
turbines, solar panels, and electric car charging stations. Students play a pivotal
role in the initiative, primarily through their participation, enthusiasm, and input
(Hawken 2015). Campus involvement is encouraged through various programs
geared towards electricity reduction and promotion of an Energy Reduction Month.
Arguably, the initiative is playing a crucial role in spurring change in Nigeria. The
major objectives/goals of the Green Institute’s Campus Initiative are:
(a) To implement and handle sustainable initiatives in universities.
(b) To monitor and minimize waste emerging from all campus activities and
operations.
(c) Instill a culture of sustainability awareness and action in the local community
and on campuses.
(d) To offer practical sustainability learning and training opportunities.
