11 Green Entrepreneurship
11.5.2.5 MitiMeth, Niger Delta, Nigeria
Another entrepreneurial venture is that of Achenyo Idachaba, who weaves stubborn
weeds into beneficial products. The problem she identified was that the Niger
Delta was grappling with the issue of being filled by aquatic weed, particularly
water hyacinth. The hyacinth posed a dire environmental issue that wreaked havoc
within local communities and ruined the supply of water. The weeds made water
stagnant and depleted nutrients that reduced fish populations, thus leading to a
significant issue for local communities dependent on subsistence fishing. Achenyo
Idachaba’s entrepreneurial vision and energy were instrumental in solving this
problem. Her entrepreneurial spirit enabled her to identify the issue and see it as
an opportunity (Hawken 2015). The business, dubbed MitiMeth, takes the weeds
and transforms them into hand-crafted products that appeal to women. These
products include jewelry, baskets as well as tableware. Achenyo has solved an
environmental issue and turned it into a lucrative business solution. It entails the
development of sustainable business, creation of jobs within local communities,
and fixing a prevalent issue. She is an excellent illustration of the new generation of
young entrepreneurs who are eager to find Green solutions to problems bedeviling
communities.
How can the Victorian hyacinth problem be addressed using the same
principles in MitiMeth? Identify four benefits of MitiMeth to the community

11.5.2.6 Afrocentric Bamboo, Ghana
In Ghana, Winnifred Selby is one of the founding members of Afrocentric Bamboo.
The company makes bamboo bicycles that create affordable and innovative transport. Similar to numerous sub-Saharan African nations, Ghana has been struggling
to find sustainable solutions to an array of socioeconomic issues, including affordable transport, effective means of eradicating poverty, and a lack of jobs. At the age
of 15, Winnifred Selby started the company with Bernice Dapaah. The company
manufactures and carries out marketing of bicycles that are made from bamboo.
The bicycles are strong, affordable, currently USD $100 in the local market, and
designed to address the rough roads found in rural Ghana (Hawken 2015). By
using a one-piece frame, they are stronger and economically viable. This innovative
approach has been instrumental in solving the issues of poverty, unemployment, and
affordable transport. Winifred has demonstrated that Green entrepreneurship can
be used for improving the economic future of a nation, particularly young people.
Arguably, Afrocentric is a distinct Green entrepreneurship that can inspire many
across sub-Saharan Africa to venture into sustainable Green business. Africa has
