11 Green Entrepreneurship
Name two more challenges that such organizations experienced.
He traced its evolution during the 1980s in terms of the costs associated with
scaling up businesses. In addition, increased scale may be characterized by altering
business practices as well as ownership. The growth of start-ups leads to an
increased requirement for more finance, particularly because Green businesses find
it hard making profits. This is partly because negative externalities are not priced.
The evolution further suggests that large companies with resources for driving
Green innovation became increasingly involved in sustainability. For instance, large
conglomerates, like Unilever, L’Oreal, and PepsiCo, acquired Green start-ups, such
as Ben & Jerry’s, The Body Shop, and Naked Juice, respectively (Jones 2017).
Today, the deterioration of the environment has spearheaded a global movement
towards Green consumerism and Green entrepreneurship. There is a widespread
belief that Green entrepreneurship should increasingly be adopted to reverse the
deteriorating state of the environment.
Is this the right step/initiative?
In addition, gas and oil corporations, such as Chevron and Exxon, as well as
technological and industrial organizations, including American corporations such as
Wal-Mart and Facebook, have continually reiterated their increased commitment to
sustainability despite President Donald Trump withdrawing from the Paris Climate
Agreement of 2015.
Perhaps, Africa is among the continents that have been late adopters of the
concept of Green entrepreneurship. In sub-Saharan Africa, policymakers have
embraced economic transformation as well as industrialization as ways for accelerating inclusive growth. They also acknowledge the importance of economic
transformation in delivering Green growth. Many Green entrepreneurs have been
acknowledged in the region because of the crucial role they have played in
promoting sustainable development. In the absence of Green entrepreneurship
policies, there is a risk that environmental stresses attributed to industrialization
will destabilize growth.
Describe some of these environmental stresses.
