trade policy, as well as energy technologies. Technologies, such as Information
Communication Technologies and Green innovation, can enhance the environment
and address climate change. Green technologies such as nanotechnology and
biotechnology in Africa could become “general purpose technologies,” because they
can be used in various industries, like the Green economy. Overall, this section
has determined that the fundamentals of Green entrepreneurship are the Green
entrepreneur, Green markets, Green innovations, creative destruction, and Green
jobs. However, all these elements can be summarized under environment, economy,
and society. The next section examines the evolution of Green entrepreneurship.

11.4 The Evolution of Green Entrepreneurship
Jones (2017) provides a holistic and comprehensive evolution of Green
entrepreneurship. The economy and the environment have always been at odds.
During the industrial revolution, economic production was significantly influenced
by steel, iron, coal, and large-scale production. Many entrepreneurial organizations
and inventors spearheaded this transition. Businesses were part of the problem
of environmental degradation rather than the solution. Despite this, specific
individuals were determined and motivated by the desire to promote environmental
sustainability through business. Various for-profit businesses during the 19th and
early 20th centuries tried to counteract the negative effects of rapid industrialization
on the environment (Parry 2012). The other attempt was the intrinsic motivation for
“Greenness” by entrepreneurs who understood the significance of environmental,
ethical, and health concerns instead of profit-maximization.
