1.1 What Does It Mean to Go Green?

to less pollution from manufacturing industries. As we minimize our waste, we
use fewer resources and energy for managing unwanted waste. Consequently, less
pollution arises from incinerators and landfills. Reducing is essential for lowering
the rate of raw material consumption and helps to minimize the waste we create.
Recycling enables us to reuse materials that are found in unwanted materials for
making new items. Finally, Going Green entails protecting the Earth’s ecological
balance . Ideally, the ecological balance is the equilibrium formed through the
harmonious co-existence of organisms, including flora and fauna. Arguably, these
five principles provide a platform for the best ways of Going Green and are further
discussed in the next section.
How can the 3Rs (reduce, reuse, and recycle) be used in the home environment
to conserve energy?

Case Study 1.1: The Fulani Herdsmen and Maasai overgrazing (tragedy of the
commons)

The Fulani pastoralists are nomadic herders who are mainly occupied in
raising livestock. Pure Fulani pastoralists often engage in moving periodically with cattle based on the seasons and weather, whereas semi-nomadic
pastoralists migrate back to their homes or camps. Historically, Fulani
herdsmen are mainly found in the Sahel and semi-arid regions of West Africa,
but because of climatic patterns, many of them have moved into the southern
states, such as Senegal, Guinea, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, and
Nigeria (Okeke 2014).
