10.2.16 Goal 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions
The main objective of Goal 16 is to “develop peaceful and inclusive societies for
sustainability, enhance access to justice and build strong institutions at all the levels”
(Sachs 2012). The reduction of sex trafficking, violent crime, compulsory labor, and
child abuse are important global goals. There has been a decline in the number of
individuals exposed to sexual exploitation. Ending sex trafficking, forced labor as
well as all forms of violence is critical for enhancing sustainable development. The
lack of sufficient data poses a major challenge and there is a need for countries to
improve their reporting (see Figs. 10.17 and 10.18). This goal also seeks to achieve
universal legal identity and registration of births by ensuring that all rights are
upheld and protected.
Africa faces a major challenge in building strong institutions. How does the
lack of strong institutions in the continent impede progress and sustainability?
10.2.17 Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals
The core objective of this goal is to “strengthen and revitalize global partnerships
for sustainable development” (Sachs 2012). International cooperation is critical
for achieving all previous goals that have been discussed. This goal is critical
for ensuring that organizations and states cooperate rather than compete. The
development of multi-stakeholder partnerships for sharing expertise, knowledge,
and financial support is crucial for the overall success of the 17 SDGs. There
is a need for public–private partnerships (PPPs), which engage civil societies to
