consciousness. Due to his criticism of genetically modified organisms, Stowe has
been the recipient of an open letter from at least 100 Nobel laureates who have
urged him to end the campaign against GMOs (Weyler 2004). His direct action has
also led to legal actions, including fines and suspended sentences. Over the years, the
organization, through the leadership of the founders, has been able to end nuclear
threats, protect all forms of biodiversity, deter pollution, promote peace and nonviolence, and end the abuse of environmental resources. Stowe has been among the
proponents of environmental ethics who have been quite successful. Arguably, his
efforts continue to change the world and spur environmental sustainability.
9.13 Future Trends
9.13.1 Africa
Ecocentrism will become central to solving the current unprecedented environmental crisis through the recognition of the responsibility of humans towards nature.
Africa will realize that transforming towards an ecocentric worldview as well as
other value systems is necessary for the flourishing of life on Earth. However,
increased consumerism and affinity for material things could deter the continent’s
