43 nations globally. This target was set more than 10 years ago, and the
organization has since established many solar and wind farms for sustaining
existing data centers, co-location facilities, retail stores as well as corporate
offices. Perhaps, Apple Park is among the current projects that best illustrates
an ethically responsible company. Apple Park has a 17-megawatt solar
installation on the rooftop. Apple has been successful in ensuring that all its
in-house activities and operations run on renewable energy, but many of its
manufacturing procedures are outsourced to third party suppliers. Apple has
further invested in Elysis; an organization that will help it produce carbonfree aluminum (Baker 2018). The company also initiated a program dubbed
Supplier Clean Energy program, which by the end of May 2018, has enabled
23 manufacturers to commit to a 100% renewable energy target, with many
aiming to achieve this target by the end of 2018 (Baker 2018). The company is
also on course to reach its target of introducing 4 GW of clean energy into its
supply chain by 2020, further minimizing the carbon footprint of its products.
Efforts like minimizing the average energy that Apple products consume as
well as investing in carbon-free aluminum research will be beneficial for
minimizing Apple’s effect on climate change. Whereas the company has
various limitations, it has generally been responsible for its programs to
ensure that it protects the environment and conserves finite resources.
9.11 Practical Application: Environmental Ethics in School
The carbon footprint of many schools is at an alarming level. This necessitates the
need for green schools by ensuring that all schools activities strive to reduce the
harm posed on the environment. The following key areas have been identified as
critical in ensuring that schools join the Environmental Ethics movement.
9.11.1 School Food
Schools should establish a partnership program to transform their food culture. This
should entail the creation of websites that have information on how students can
participate, events, and Food Tube short films. Schools should also establish a social
media page where dissatisfied parents/guardians can post about their experiences.
