four years old due to the Chernobyl disaster and moved to Toronto, Canada, in
1987 (Bhasin 2011). He attended Upper Canada College before joining Princeton
University. During his sophomore year, he dropped out of school to concentrate on
TerraCycle. Early in his career, he established dot-com companies and was named
in 2006 as the best CEO under 30 years because of his work in TerraCycle.
TerraCycle plays a crucial role in reducing the amount of waste generated
through recycling of the non-recyclable by collecting and recycling all forms of
waste. It partners with individual collectors and major consumer product organizations, manufacturers, municipalities, as well as small businesses across 20 nations
(Bhasin 2011). With help from people, the organization can divert large volumes of
waste from incinerators and landfills every month.
Szaky’s vision is that nothing is garbage. As a startup, TerraCycle has enabled
Szaky to build a $24 million business with the belief that all things or waste are
recyclable (Bhasin 2011). He has successfully convinced major retailers and brands,
including Office Depot Inc., Colgate-Palmolive Co, and Procter & Gamble, that
there is a benefit in ensuring that garbage is not in landfills. TerraCycle started
in Tom’s dorm room as he had a passion for solving the problem of waste. Over
the years, Szaky has made a pivotal contribution by shifting TerraCycle’s model
