8.5 Solid Waste Management Process
179
Identify some of the wastes treated through physical treatment. Is physical
treatment effective and environmentally friendly?
8.4.2 Chemical Treatment
Various chemicals are used for treating hazardous wastes in order to neutralize them
and eliminate their toxicity. It entails modifying the chemical properties of wastes
using oxidation, precipitation, neutralization, and reduction.
What are some wastes that can be managed by chemical treatment?
8.4.3 Biological Treatment
Biological treatment entails the actions of microorganisms on waste products.
Microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria are scavengers, which decompose
organic substances in waste (Polprasert 2017). Ideally, biological treatment entails
the processes of conditioning, digestion, composting, and disposal. Some microorganisms used for biological treatment belong to the genus Porphyromonas, Veillonella, Actinomyces, Bacteroides, Clostridium, Fusobacterium, Peptostreptococcus, Propionibacterium, Porphyromonas, and Prevotella.
8.5 Solid Waste Management Process
The various steps that are involved in solid waste management: waste generation,
storage, collection, and disposal to dumping site are shown in Fig. 8.2.
Waste generation refers to the material discarded after serving its purpose or
when it is not useful. Storage and processing refer to activities linked to the
management of storage and processing of solid waste at generation points. On
the other hand, collection entails the activities geared towards solid waste collection at particular locations. Transfer and transport activities entail waste transfer
from points of collection to vehicles where they are transported to disposal sites
(Menikpura et al. 2013). Processing and recovery are facilities and techniques used
for recovering wastes for various treatments. Disposal is the final step where waste
is disposed to the landfill site. Solid waste is generated within many urban centers
in the world, thus making solid waste disposal an issue that affects urban centers.
Various activities produce large quantities of wastes that should be appropriately
