Despite the government not producing any evidence against Saro-Wiwa, the men
were executed on November 10, 1995, by hanging. They were later buried in
Port Harcourt Cemetery. This action led to the suspensions of Nigeria from the
Commonwealth. Supporters of the Ogoni organized protests globally, while many
world leaders stated that there was a need for an oil embargo and economic
sanctions. Arguably, Saro-Wiwa played a crucial role in illuminating the tribulations
and suffering that the Ogoni community experienced. In addition, despite the Ogoni
suffering substantial losses during the campaign, they succeeded in removing Shell
from the region.
7.11 Future Trends
7.11.1 Africa
Africa will respond well to various solutions on wastewater, with many clients
appreciating the significance of water treatment as well as environmental benefits
and the welfare of the people. The future of waste treatment in the continent could be
challenging in case the rules on environmental issues will be brought up. One of the
defining issues in the coming decades will be access to clean water. Reverse osmosis
will increasingly be used as a water treatment technology that uses a semi-permeable
membrane for removing dissolved ions and larger water particles. The increasing
international initiative of Going Green and embracing more energy-efficient systems
imply that institutions will have to increasingly invest in research to increase water
treatment plants’ efficiency and integrate the renewable sources of energy like solar.
7.11.2 Asia
Large-scale seawater desalination will be the major driver of water and wastewater
treatment in the region. Scientists will continue working to improve and ensure
that saltwater purification is affordable. Developing regions in the Middle East
will have more demand for these plants, thus providing growth opportunities for
major suppliers within the water and wastewater treatment equipment market. Since
seawater desalination needs large volumes of energy and chemicals, top companies
will focus on developing eco-friendly and innovative desalination processes as well
as machinery for futuristic use at minimized costs and environmental impact.
