6 Renewable Energy
Experiment on Solar Distillation
Materials Required Water, clear plastic wrap, two (2) large plastic containers, two (2) small glasses, masking tape, two (2) tablespoons of dirt, two (2)
small rocks, and two (2) tablespoons of salt.
Background of the Experiment Hydropower is perceived as a renewable
source of energy since the water on the planet continually goes through
the water cycle due to the energy of the sun. This experiment seeks to
demonstrate how the sun could be used for making water more useful. Distill
in this experiment means turning something into a gas through vaporization
and converting it back into a liquid through condensation in order to purify
it.
Pre-Questions
• Are you able to distill clean water from the muddy water?
• Are you able to distill clean from salty water?
Experiment Procedure
1. Fill the plastic containers with water to 2.5 cm level. Mix the dirt into one
of the containers with water and salt into the other.
2. Place an empty glass into the middle of the plastic containers and ensure
it remains empty.
3. Cover the plastic containers using plastic wrap and seal them using the
masking tape. Place a rock in the center of the plastic wrap; it should be
directly over each glass but not touch it.
4. Position the stills in a place with sunlight for 2 h. Observe the water
forming in the glass and record what you observe.
Analysis
Did the stills make clean water?
Critical Thinking
Explain the way the experiments worked. Imagine a situation where knowledge could save your life. Estimates suggest that more than one billion
individuals globally drink unhealthy water. How can your project assist this
population?
Regarding wind power, airflow can be utilized for running wind turbines.
Wind farms are mainly located in areas where winds are more robust and consistent, including high altitude sites and offshore. In 2015, it was established that
wind-generated electricity accounted for 4% of the electricity demand globally
