3 Everyday Activities in the Green World
3.12.7 South America
South America will continue having a dynamic renewable energy market, and
scaling up its contribution to the future energy mix will remain a major priority.
Wind and solar power generation have great potential throughout the continent.
Public transportation will continue being widely used, leading to the creation of
opportunities for electrifying larger vehicles that can run the whole day. National
and city-wide efforts for improving air quality and tackling climate change will
remain the main driving forces for the increasing interest in electric mobility. In
Bogota, Colombia financial incentives and more electric vehicle models will spur
electronic vehicle sales. Within Santiago, Chile strong electric mobility and climate
change goals will provide long-term direction for the markets whereas green vehicle
taxes could be instrumental in leveling the playing field for the Electric Vehicles
(EVs). Generally, programs introducing electric taxi and government fleets will lead
to more EVs on the road.
3.13 Summary
• This chapter seeks to explore the role of various activities in the Green World.
• Sustainable agriculture is crucial for environmental preservation, public health
protection, sustenance of vibrant communities, upholding animal welfare, conservation of finite resources, and enhancing a sustainable food future.
• Organic agriculture also plays the same roles in promoting Green growth.
• Industries promote the appropriate use of finite resources, sustainable production,
recycling solid waste streams, low emissions, and the use of fewer virgin
materials. Perhaps, the significant role may be the triple-bottom phenomenon.
• Green energy incorporates the five principles of Going Green. It contributes to
less global warming, the creation of employment opportunities, and improved
public health. Also, it minimizes the number of atmospheric emissions.
• The success of Vandana Shiva and Wangari Maathai highlights that there is a
need for more women to raise voices against environmental vices. The chapter
further explains how women can be empowered to become active participants if
not leaders in environmental stewardship debate and change.
• Science and technology have been beneficial for ensuring that development
efforts are sustainable. Technological changes lead to a reduction of waste,
recycling, control of pollution, and efficient use of resources.
• Socio-political systems are instrumental in the development of proactive and
responsive policies that emphasize the need for environmental conservation and
protection. These systems also establish mechanisms for ensuring less harm to
the natural environment.
• Rural-urban migration may lead to environmental degradation or conservation,
depending on their nature and as such, ascertaining their exact roles is quite
tricky.
