The purpose of this book is to focus on the services provided by mangroves, which
is one of the vital resource reservoirs of the planet Earth. These resources mainly
encompass coastal vegetation with medicinal values, timber, fuel wood, fodder,
honey, wax, fishes, molluscan lime, etc. However, some services of mangroves are
yet untapped, e.g. cultural services, whose evaluation is yet to go a long way. I
believe this book will be a useful source of information for those working on sustainable coastal resource management.
I, the author of this textbook, depend on a number of people, mostly those
researchers whose sincere labour in the field and laboratory provided the raw materials, out of which the chapters have been synthesized. These people are Dr. Tanmay
Ray Chaudhuri, IPS, Dr. Subhra Bikash Bhattacharyya, Dr. Kakoli Bannerjee, Dr.
Amitava Aich, Dr. Kiran Lal Das, Dr. Sufia Zaman, Dr. Harekrishna Jana, Dr.
Rajrupa Ghosh, Dr. Prosenjit Pramanick, Dr. Shankhadeep Chakraborty, Dr. Atanu
Roy, Dr. Pritam Mukherjee, Dr. Roopali Roychowdhury, Dr. Asish Mondal, Dr.
Kasturi Sengupta, Dr. Kunal Mondal, Dr. Subhasmita Sinha, Ms. Nabonita Pal, Ms.
Arpia Saha, Ms. Sudeshna Biswas, Mr. Sitangshu Roy, Mr. Abhisek Saha, Mr.
Samimul Islam, Mr. Prosenjit Mitra, Mr. Joystu Dutta and Mr. Pavel Biswas
My debt to Ms. Barnali Sarkar of the Fishery Department is uncommonly large.
Her contribution went far beyond that of editor as she added texture and colour to
my prose and provided enormously strong mental support.
I am thankful to Dr. Pardis Fazli of the Department of Biological and Agricultural
Engineering, University Putra, Selangor, Malaysia, for her effort in representing my
data in graphical forms.
Several innovative programmes that constitute the backbone of the present book
may serve as road map in climate change mitigation and adaptation process. Few
examples of such innovations are mangrove-based food products by Mr. Prosenjit
Pramanick and carbon and nitrogen sequestration potential of mangroves by Ms.
Nabonita Pal and Ms. Ankita Mitra, etc., which are valuable assets of the present
knowledge reservoir.
Finally, I express my gratefulness to my wife, Shampa; daughter, Ankita; and
mother, Manjulika, whose inspirations and encouragements act as booster to
