In coastal West Bengal and adjacent estuarine systems, the seasonal variation of
surface water temperature is not drastic between premonsoon and monsoon seasons. The premonsoon period (March to mid-June) is characterized by a mean
surface water temperature around 34 °C. The monsoon perod (mid-June to October)
shows a surface water temperature around 32 °C (mean) and the postmonsoon
period (November to February) is characterized by cold weather with a mean surface water temperature around 23 °C (Mitra 2000).
Surface Water Salinity
In context to Indian Sundarbans, the aquatic salinity is the principal regulating
component influencing spawning, growth and survival of oyster species. The spatial variation of salinity in different locations of Indian Sundarbans may be attributed to the proximity of the station to the coastal Bay of Bengal where the average
