Applications of Liquid Crystalline Polymers
LCPs have a unique combination of orientational, magnetic, electrical, optical, and
mechanical properties with provisions of high toughness and easy processing
parameters such as low die swell and good flowability (Jaffe 1991). They also
possess excellent thermal and chemical resistance properties, with very high modulus and dimensional stability making them a material of interest in recent day’s
application areas (Fig. 16). LCPs are material of interest in recent era due to the
exceptionally interesting anisotropic properties as described earlier. These materials
find application in a number of areas such as electrical or electronics, information
technologies, medical, aircraft, fiber optics, chemical and domestic equipment, etc.
They have excellent thermal conductivity, good dielectric strength, resistance to
solvents, high dimensional stability, and electrically insulating nature, which make
them operational as connectors, potentiometers, optical amplifiers, laser beam
deflectors, etc. The exceptional properties of the orientation ability of LCPs under
the electrical and magnetic field or by application of light make them attractive in
numerous areas such as data storage devices, displays, light modulators, etc. The
inherent flame retardancy, moisture resistivity, and mechanical robustness make
LCPs a potential candidate in the field of fiber optics as connectors, couplers, etc.
