5 Carbon fibres are of various types (e.g. high strength, high
modulus, ablative, etc.) [8].
5 Carbon fibres are made from different precursors, such as
polyacrylonitrile (PAN) fibres, mesophase pitch, and rayon
fibres.
Due to the inert behaviour of carbon fibres, the surface of carbon
fibres is activated by the following methods:
5 Liquid-phase oxidation (bromine water)
5 Gas-phase oxidation (mixture of oxygen and nitrogen)
5 Chemical vapour deposition (CVD) in the case of carbon
whiskers
The activated surface is coated with a very thin layer of either polyimide, epoxy, polyurethane, or phenolic resins. The polyimide or
epoxy layer covalently bonds with activated carbon surface as well
as with the matrix. The strain does not cause failure of the interphase due to the presence of the polymeric interphase, which has
the capability to yield.
