Abstract :
Sea-level rise has become a major concern for the scientific community and decision-makers.
Numerous studies on coastal vulnerability have been carried out in most countries to anticipate
the effects of sea-level rise on their coasts. However, studies carried out to assess coastal
vulnerability in Algeria are rare, mainly due to a lack of data, and no study has yet been carried
out on the Chlef coastline.
The results obtained have enabled us to assess the state of coastal vulnerability. In terms of
physical vulnerability, 77.4% of Chlef's coastline is not vulnerable to the risks of erosion and
submersion, being made up mainly of cliffs and rocky coasts. 17% of the coastline has low to
moderate vulnerability, consisting mainly of sandy areas, On the other hand, socio-economic
vulnerability revealed that 44% of the coastline is moderately vulnerable.
Swell propagation scenarios based on four main swell directions, of which the north-westerly
direction is the most unfavourable.
On the total surface area of 318.5 ha, there is a risk of submersion with a flood level of 2 metres,
while on hectares 837.9, the maximum submersion level reaches 7 metres.
Keywords : sea level rise, vulnerability, chlef coastline, submersion, climate change,
geohazards.
