the Algerian coast and to evaluate the most exposed areas to coastal risks to the horizons
2030/2100. This work was largely based on the use of free satellite data from 1984 to 2021
and statistical methods to develop a cost-effective spatial database for monitoring the
Algerian coastline.
The analysis of the evolution of the coastline showed contrasting trends, both in space and
in time. Indeed, long-term results show that Bou Ismail Bay has a stable trend with an
average rate of change equal to 0.35 m/year; the Bay of Algiers has a tendency towards
accretion with an average rate of 1.24 m/year.
On the other hand, Zemmouri Bay experienced very distinct results between its different
sections; the western and central parts have a stable trend with an average rate of 0.44
m/year and -0.01 m/year, respectively. While in the eastern part we observe a very strong
decline, with a decline rate of -4.98 m/year.
Based on the short-term analysis, the results show a cyclical erosion-creation pattern along
the coastline of the study area. These results also show that the erosion effect due to the
2007 storm was extremely significant. Thus, the coast after this event is the most degraded.
The study of morphosedimentary changes was accompanied by an analysis of wind, swell
and current data, with the aim of explaining the role of these forcings in the evolution of
the coastline. The analysis of the results showed that the evolution of the Algerian coastline
is controlled by both natural processes and anthropogenic activities.
The mapping of the marine submersion hazard by 2030/2050, taking into account the sea
level rise scenario linked to climate change and the scenario linked to extreme weather
events, has clearly highlighted the most vulnerable areas to marine flooding.
Keywords: shoreline evolution, marine submersion, coastal risks, hydro-sedimentary, the
Algerian coast.
