Chapter 10
Eco-management of Industrial Organic
Wastes Through the Modified Innovative
Vermicomposting Process: A Sustainable
Approach in Tropical Countries
Ram Kumar Ganguly and Susanta Kumar Chakraborty
Abstract Organic farming demands a great role in soil maintenance, crop productivity and thereby triggers a new trend towards the green economy. Compost
generated from vermicomposting technology contains essential nutrients required
for the development of plants and hence can be used as bio-fertilizer for sustainable
development. The concept of organic farming is still at its infancy in most of the
tropical countries, mostly due to lack of consumer awareness. Various experimental
studies, which are being conducted in order to boost the improvement and higher
production of the crop through nutrient enrichment, rely considerably on the
vermicomposting process. Production of vermicompost utilizing different organic
decomposable industrial wastes and suitable species of earthworms tend to solve
many human problems such as pollution, poverty (through livelihood generation),
proper agro-ecosystem development, and environmental sustainability alongside
ensuring proper eco-management of industrial wastes. Therefore, this study tries to
focus on different types of techniques adapted during vermicomposting and reflects
earthworm performance in an ecological box using FTIR and GC MS technology.
Furthermore, the study combines the concept of microbial and chemical ecology in
context of vermicomposting and provides a complete evidence of its diverse application in agriculture.
