Abstract
This final thesis focuses on the breeding of the common cuttlefish, a cephalopod species
consumed and highly demanded in the Algerian market. The main objective of this study
was to assess the feasibility of breeding common cuttlefish in captivity, with a particular
emphasis on reproduction, growth, and nutrition aspects.
The first part of the thesis examines the biological characteristics of the common
cuttlefish, its natural habitat, and its economic importance. It also addresses the challenges associated with the capture of wild cuttlefish and the potential impacts on natural
populations.
The second part focuses on the methods of captive breeding of the common cuttlefish.
It describes the necessary facilities for breeding, including water filtration systems and
optimal environmental conditions. Reproduction and egg incubation techniques are also
discussed, as well as recommended dietary regimens to ensure healthy growth.
The third part presents the results of an experimental study conducted to evaluate the
viability of breeding common cuttlefish in captivity. The main parameters studied included
juvenile survival, growth rate, and quality characteristics of the raised specimens.
The results of the study showed that breeding common cuttlefish in captivity is technically feasible but still presents significant challenges, particularly in terms of reproduction
and nutrition. Further improvements in breeding and management techniques are necessary to achieve sustainable commercial production.
In conclusion, this thesis highlights the importance of breeding common cuttlefish to
ensure resource sustainability and reduce pressure on wild populations. It also underscores the need for continued research and development in this field to improve breeding
techniques and maximize the commercial potential of this species.
Key words : Breeding, common cuttlefish, techniques, reproduction, feeding, environmental conditions, sustainability, food security, aquaculture.
