 Light reaction: A rapid reaction taking place in the chloroplast membrane. It enables
light energy to be converted into chemical energy to produce NADPH2 and ATP. The
oxygen released results from the dissociation of the consumed water molecule.
 Dark reaction: This reaction takes place in the stroma, where the products of the light
reaction are used to reduce CO2 into carbohydrates. This stage is significantly slower
than the previous one. (Sialve & Steyer, 2013).
1.1.6. Microalgal growth dynamics
The growth of microalgae follows a curve (Figure 3) that describes the evolution of algal
biomass over time. This curve is divided into several phases that reflect changes in the biomass
and its environment (Yuan-Kun &Hui, 2004).
