15.1 Conclusion
This book includes close to a hundred tips to improve your presentations. But not all
of these tips were created equal. As a conclusion, I suggest you clearly emphasize
the following ones:
• Get inspired by documentaries – what they do, what they don’t
• Don’t compete with yourself – avoid text
• Provide visual info exactly when needed
• Animate your text, tables and graphs
• But avoid fancy useless animations
• Avoid the laser pointer – embed emphasis in your presentation
• Invest time on your graphs – don’t just copy from reports
• Avoid math as much as possible
• Dive into your presentation (no outline, acknowledgments at end)
• Practice a lot but don’t learn by heart
• Remove material to avoid having to rush through your slides
• No one will notice you removed something
The rest is mostly details and the ‘mechanics’ of it all. A few more important
things to remember:
• Investing time in your slide deck demonstrates respect for your audience. People
feel smarter when they understand
While you may or may not be a good speaker, a good slide deck will always
make your message go through with great success!
