1. Normal stress in the diametrical plane of specimen crushing in the Brazilian
method is not the material’s ultimate tensile strength and for some brittle bodies
can be several times less than the specified ultimate strength.
2. Despite the solid identification of this break-off stress and ultimate tensile
strength, it is reasonable (at least in educational materials) to underline the nonidentity of these two characteristics of material strength.
3. The method of load application when crushing the specimen has no significant
influence on the normal break-off stress during destruction.
