• K 1 : A factor that is related to the Froude number (Fr) as: K 1 = Fr
−1/3 . Experimental
models indicate that Fr < 4.5 is required to prevent smoke backlayering (e.g. Lee
et al. 1979). When Fr = 4.5, then the value of K 1 = 0.606. Alternatively, this
dimensionless value can be obtained for different Heat Release Ratios (HRR)
from NFPA 502:2017 (see Table 7.1).
• g: Acceleration due to gravity, 9.81 (m s
−2 ).
• H: Height of the tunnel or gallery at the location of the fire (m).
• K g : Grade factor, a dimensionless value that can be obtained from Fig. 7.7 (see
NFPA 502:2017) as a function of the road grade
