Barkot Sections
A well preserved section exhibiting the lateral continuity of terrace sequence
exposed along the road cutting at Chattanga, around 6 km north of Barkot, on the
left bank of Yamuna R., was studied. The terrace at this locality continues downstream almost parallel to the channel with similar elevations (Fig. 14a). Here six
levels of terraces are well preserved. The topmost terrace deposit exposes ~9 m
thick gravel deposit resting over bed rock and consists of 3 m poorly sorted, clast
supported, imbricated subrounded to rounded gravel unit (Gm) exposed at the base
(Fig. 13a). This unit is overlain by 1.8 m thick gravel unit with reduced clast size.
The unit is overlain by 2.2 m thick Gm facies and is capped by 2 m thick matrix
supported unit consisting of gravel embedded in a matrix (Gm2) (Fig. 13a). These
terraces continue downstream beyond Barkot upto Naugaon-Phauntipul area
(Fig. 14a) where along the river cutting a complete sedimentary sequence of terrace
deposit is exposed consisting dominantly of Gm facies with stacking of gravel in
Fig. 12 Valley morphology, disposition of terraces, lithologs of measured sections and sedimentary facies of terrace deposit at Chattanga village area. Multiple cut and fill terraces
