Fig. 4 Joint construction detail for Hastelloy – C series weld overlay [11]
Hastelloy – C series weld overlay is used in protection, repair, and refurbishment
in various industries through the construction of a thin internal or external surface.
Inter-dendritic TCP phases are formed in Hastelloy C-276 and Hastelloy C-22 due to
high Mo content in combination with Fe and W, which adversely affect various properties of the material. Hastelloy C-2000 exhibits excellent corrosion resistance in all
environments including oxidizing and reducing atmospheres. Dilution of weld metal
in the base metal is one of the most important factors in deciding the quality of the
weld overlay. It has to be controlled in order to reduce the cost of manufacturing and
enhance corrosion resistance. Advance welding processes like CMT, HWT, PTAW,
and laser cladding have shown a promising future for Hastelloy – C series weld
overlay. The quality of weld overlay in addition is dependent on proper consumable
selection, joint design, and weld overlay technique because of its complex chemistry
and a plethora of possible interactions in the Hastelloy – C series. It is the need of
the hour to put more effort in conducting more research to understand weld overlay
characteristics with the advance welding process.
